The Man Behind the Mission
Er. Ashok Kumar, as the founding member of Sri Sai Eye Hospital (SSEH), has devoted his life to addressing the critical issue of preventable blindness. Being an alumnus of BIT Sindri, having graduated between 1982 and 1986, his exceptional leadership skills helped him achieve recognition as the youngest District Governor of the prestigious Lions Club International, serving in this role from 2001 to 2002. Although trained as a civil engineer, his professional passion ultimately extended far beyond his career in engineering to encompass essential humanitarian service. He earned distinction, retiring at the high-ranking position of Chief Engineer within the Road Construction Department. His commitment to community welfare started during his college years with the Rotaract Club, where he actively helped organize free check-up camps for citizens who are suffering from eye health ailment.
Personally witnessing the profound joy of restored sight among economically disadvantaged individuals strengthen his lifelong promise to fight preventable blindness. This early experience provided the motivation for his vision of creating an accessible, high-quality eye care facility. He currently serves as the founding trustee and Chairman of the Shiva-Rama Foundation, the entity overseeing the hospital's operations.
Organization Journey: Establishing a Center of Excellence in Eye Care
The foundation of Sri Sai Eye Hospital is rooted in a dedicated mission named ‘VisionFirst’, driven by the founder’s clear understanding of the need the community is having in the ocular health care sector. The initial, tangible step in fulfilling this great humanitarian vision took place with the establishment of Sri Sai Lion Netralaya in Patna on December 12, 2004. This facility was specifically created to provide quality eye care services to people who were most in need, particularly the poor and those suffering eye health ailments in the community.
This crucial commitment deepened significantly when Er. Ashok Kumar became a member of Lions Club International in 1990. Utilizing his professional expertise and proven leadership, he took the lead in systematically organizing numerous Blindness Relief Camps dedicated to serving underprivileged communities across Bihar. These impactful relief events solidified his conviction that a permanent, not-for-profit eye hospital was absolutely necessary to serve the state’s indigent population effectively.
However, the founder’s mission did not stop with successfully running the Netralaya and merely offering free cataract surgeries. His vision expanded considerably; he sought to establish a comprehensive “Center of Excellence” in Ophthalmology. This center needed to be fully equipped with the advanced treatment facilities and commit to providing compassionate care to every patient suffering from preventable blindness in Bihar. Overcoming numerous significant organizational hurdles, this challenging dream was ultimately realized on January 20, 2020, with the official establishment of Sri Sai Eye Hospital. This institution is a modern, tertiary-level super specialty eye hospital located in the heart of Patna, Kankarbagh.
Sri Sai Eye Hospital is successfully running under the umbrella of the Shiva-Rama Foundation, reflecting a deep commitment to non-profit, community-focused service. To guarantee the most effective healthcare delivery and manage the crucial supply chain seamlessly, the hospital also launched a related venture, Rama-Meditech and Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., which handles the supply of essential opticals, medicines, and specialized surgical consumables.
Having served over 2.5 million beneficiaries and completed more than 250,000 successful surgeries, the organization has established a proven track record of excellence for over 20 years. The hospital operates with advanced technology and state-of-art infrastructure, and it is empanelled with various government and insurance schemes to ensure that its specialized care remains accessible and affordable for a wide range of patients. The organization is now focused on its next significant goal of establishing at least five state-of-the-art, non-profit eye hospitals in different regions across Bihar. This strategic expansion is designed to further the mission of eliminating avoidable blindness and bringing the invaluable gift of restored vision to every deprived section of the marginalized community
